What is susu? How the savings circle works in Ghana

Friends discussing their community savings around a table

The basic idea

Susu is a rotating savings circle. A group of people — market traders, friends, colleagues — agree to contribute a fixed amount on a regular schedule, usually daily or weekly. A susu collector gathers the contributions, and each member takes the full pot in turn, until everyone has had their turn.

For many people it is the only savings system they have ever used, and it works for a simple reason: someone else holds the money, so you cannot dip into it. The discipline comes from the group, not from willpower.

Why susu still works

Susu suits people whose money arrives in small amounts throughout the week — traders, drivers, artisans. A daily contribution of GH₵10 is easy to hand over at the end of a market day, and by the end of the month it adds up to real money.

It is also social. The group knows you, expects you, and notices when you miss. That accountability is hard to find in a bank app.

The risks you should know about

The biggest risk is the person holding the money. If a collector disappears with a group's contributions, there is often no formal record and no regulator to call. This fear comes up again and again in Ghanaian conversations about saving — and it is a fair one.

There are other weaknesses: no written record of your balance, no way to check your contributions from your phone, and if you need your money before your turn comes, getting it back depends on goodwill.

Keeping the good part, dropping the risk

You can keep everything that makes susu work — automatic, frequent, out-of-your-hands saving — without a human collector holding the cash. With My Goal Needs Money, the debit comes straight from your MTN MoMo, AirtelTigo or Telecel wallet on the schedule you choose, and your balance is visible in the app at any time.

The picture mechanic even adds something susu never had: a photo of what you are saving for, revealed tile by tile with every contribution. Ready to try it? Set up your first goal in a few minutes.

Put it into practice.
