How to save automatically with MTN Mobile Money in Ghana

Why automatic beats willpower

Most of us plan to save whatever is left at the end of the week — and most weeks, nothing is left. Automatic saving flips the order: the money moves to your goal first, on a schedule, before you can spend it.

With mobile money, this happens through a direct debit mandate. You approve it once on your phone, and the agreed amount moves from your MTN MoMo wallet to your goal daily, weekly or monthly — no reminders, no forms.

How the approval works

When you set up an automatic debit, MTN sends an approval prompt to your phone. You confirm with your MoMo PIN. That approval authorises the recurring debit — you will not be asked again each time.

Only approve prompts you triggered yourself, and check the merchant name and amount on the prompt before entering your PIN. You can pause or cancel the mandate whenever you need to.

Picking an amount you can sustain

Start smaller than you think you should. A debit you barely notice — say the cost of one meal out — repeated every week beats an ambitious amount you cancel after a month.

Divide your goal by the number of weeks until you want it. If the weekly figure feels heavy, stretch the timeline rather than straining the amount. Consistency is the whole strategy.

Make the goal visible

Saving works better when the reward stays in sight. On My Goal Needs Money, you upload a picture of what you are saving towards and it is covered with tiles. Every successful debit lifts a tile — you literally watch your goal come into focus as you pay for it.
