How to save for school fees in Ghana, term by term

Fees are predictable — treat them that way

Unlike emergencies, school fees have a date written on them: three terms a year, every year. The amount may rise, but the timing never moves. That makes school fees one of the most save-able expenses a family has.

If your child's fees are GH₵1,800 a term, the goal is not 'GH₵1,800' — it is 'GH₵1,800 by the first week of next term'.

Save in thirds, starting a term ahead

The cleanest system: while your child is in one term, you are saving for the next one. That gives you roughly three months per term, so the fee divides into manageable weekly or monthly debits.

Save a little extra each term to absorb fee increases — even GH₵5 a week across a term builds a buffer.

Make it automatic and separate

The families who never struggle with fees are the ones where the money moves by itself, into a place that is not the daily wallet. Set up an automatic debit from your mobile money wallet the day after payday or after a good market day, and let it run.

On My Goal Needs Money you can keep separate goals per child or per term, each with its own schedule and its own picture. When the goal fills, pay out to your wallet or, where supported, directly to the school's wallet.

Put it into practice.

Set a goal, pick your rhythm, and let each debit reveal the picture.
